Leadership Transition at Google DeepMind
<cite index="14-4">Google parent company Alphabet on Wednesday, August 5, announced a leadership overhaul of its AI division, with AI chief Demis Hassabis leaving his main managerial role and several leaders of its Gemini model, including veteran engineer Jeff Dean, departing the company.</cite>
<cite index="6-2">Hassabis is giving up the CEO title to become chairman of the unit and chief scientist of Alphabet, formalizing a shift away from day-to-day management and toward AGI (artificial general intelligence) strategy and scientific applications of AI.</cite> <cite index="2-3">Hassabis, a co-founder who has led DeepMind since 2010, will also continue to run pharmaceutical spinoff Isomorphic Labs.</cite> <cite index="6-5">Hassabis, who shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his AlphaFold work, wrote to staff that he believes AGI is close at hand and that getting the next steps right is critical for humanity.</cite>

Kavukcuoglu's Mandate
<cite index="5-6,5-7,5-8">Koray Kavukcuoglu will take over day-to-day management of Google DeepMind. He previously served as DeepMind's chief technology officer and Google's chief AI architect. As senior vice president of Google DeepMind, Kavukcuoglu will report directly to Pichai and oversee Gemini model development, frontier AI research, the Gemini app, and Google's AI developer platforms.</cite>
<cite index="4-5">Semafor earlier reported that Hassabis had been shifting day-to-day responsibility for Gemini and Google's consumer AI strategy to Kavukcuoglu for at least a year.</cite> <cite index="11-6">In 2025, Google CEO Sundar Pichai had appointed Kavukcuoglu, then DeepMind's chief technology officer, to an additional senior post as Google's chief AI architect.</cite>

Concurrent Departures and Backdrop
