Anthropic Hires Andrej Karpathy as Google DeepMind Talent Exodus Accelerates

The hiring of the OpenAI co-founder and former Tesla AI chief to lead pre-training research is the most prominent move yet in a broader talent realignment reshaping frontier AI lab competition.

Karpathy Joins Anthropic's Pre-Training Team

Andrej Karpathy, one of the best-known artificial intelligence researchers in the world and a founding member of OpenAI, announced on May 19, 2026, that he is joining rival AI lab Anthropic. Karpathy previously led artificial intelligence at Tesla before returning briefly to OpenAI.

Karpathy joined Anthropic's pre-training team, which is responsible for the massive training runs that give Claude its core knowledge and capabilities, and will help launch a new team focused on using Claude itself to accelerate pre-training research. Confirming the hire directly, Karpathy posted on X: "I've joined Anthropic. I think the next few years at the frontier of Large Language Models (LLMs) will be especially formative."

Anthropic's Head of Pre-Training, Nicholas Joseph, himself a former OpenAI alumnus, added that Karpathy "will be building a team focused on using Claude to accelerate pretraining research itself."

While at OpenAI, Karpathy focused on deep learning and computer vision until he departed in 2017 to join Tesla, where he led the Full Self-Driving (FSD) and Autopilot programs before leaving in 2022. He then returned to OpenAI for one year before departing again in 2024 to start Eureka Labs, a startup dedicated to applying AI assistants to education. Based on Karpathy's announcement post, his contributions to the AI-native education effort appear to be paused as he begins work at Anthropic.

A Pattern of Senior Technical Hires

The Karpathy hire is part of a broader talent accumulation trend at Anthropic. In the period between mid-2025 and early 2026, chief technology officers from Workday, You.com, Instagram, Box, Super.com, and Adept AI each took Member of Technical Staff research roles at Anthropic.

DeepMind Departures Intensify

Karpathy's move preceded a more concentrated exodus from Google DeepMind. Five senior Google DeepMind researchers departed for Anthropic and OpenAI within one week in June 2026. Alphabet lost roughly $270 billion in market value as exits included Nobel laureate John Jumper and Transformer co-author Noam Shazeer.

The exits include Nobel Prize winner John Jumper (to Anthropic), Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer (to OpenAI), AI coding researcher Jonas Adler (to Anthropic), pre-training specialist Alexander Pritzel (to Anthropic), and Gemini 2.5 contributor Arthur Conmy (to Anthropic).

Three of the four researchers heading to Anthropic worked together on the AlphaFold protein structure prediction system that earned the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Jumper led the AlphaFold project and shared the Nobel with DeepMind Chief Executive Officer Demis Hassabis.

Internal resource politics appear to have played a role. Shortly before Shazeer announced his move to OpenAI, Google reportedly reassigned computing capacity from one of his projects to another DeepMind team in London; the change was intended to improve collaboration and consolidate pre-training work, but resource allocation had become a source of tension as teams competed for limited advanced chips.

DeepMind Chief Executive Demis Hassabis said movement between leading laboratories was expected in the current market and argued that Google still had the largest and broadest research team in the industry.

Migration data underscores the directional nature of the flow. Engineers at DeepMind were nearly 11 times more likely to leave for Anthropic than the reverse, according to SignalFire's 2025 State of Talent report. Anthropic's two-year retention rate leads every frontier lab.

Anthropic's Competitive Position

The talent acquisitions coincide with a period of rapid commercial growth for Anthropic. Anthropic hit $47 billion in annualized revenue — Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) — in May 2026, disclosed alongside its Series H announcement. Anthropic filed confidentially for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) on June 1, 2026, at a $965 billion valuation, after closing a $65 billion Series H.

Karpathy is one of the few researchers who can bridge the gap between LLM theory and large-scale training practice. Tapping him to build such a team is a clear sign from Anthropic that it believes AI-assisted research, rather than pure compute, is how it stays competitive with OpenAI and Google.
