Launched August 7, 2025 as a unified system pairing a fast instant model with a deeper reasoning mode via real-time router. Initial release replaced GPT-4o as default in ChatGPT. Subsequent iterations (GPT-5.1 through GPT-5.6) have advanced rapidly; the original GPT-5 snapshot is scheduled for deprecation December 11, 2026.
