OpenAI
OpenAI is an American artificial intelligence research and deployment company, founded in December 2015 as a nonprofit before converting to a for-profit public benefit corporation (PBC) structure in 2025. It is best known for developing the ChatGPT conversational assistant, the GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) family of large language models, and a suite of multimodal AI products spanning text, image, audio, and video generation. As of mid-2026, it is one of the most highly valued private technology companies in the world, with a post-money valuation of $852 billion following a $122 billion funding round.
In April 2026, OpenAI closed a record $122B funding round at an $852B post-money valuation, led by Amazon ($50B), SoftBank ($30B), and NVIDIA ($30B). In October 2025, OpenAI completed a major recapitalization, converting to a public benefit corporation (PBC) while the nonprofit OpenAI Foundation retained equity control. On June 8, 2026, OpenAI filed a confidential S-1 with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), initiating a potential IPO process with Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley as lead banks, targeting a valuation exceeding $1 trillion. In May 2025, OpenAI acquired io, an AI hardware startup led by former Apple designer Jony Ive, for approximately $6.5 billion. The Stargate joint venture — a $500B data-center infrastructure program with SoftBank, Oracle, and MGX — is underway. The Sora video generation app was shut down in April 2026, with the API set to retire September 2026. GPT-5.6 (Sol/Terra/Luna tiers) is the current frontier model generation as of July 2026. OpenAI released its first open-weight models (gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, Apache 2.0 license) in 2025.
