Aircraft Architecture
<cite index="3-5">Airbound uses a rocket-like, tail-sitter design for its drones, which takes off and lands vertically in an upright position before transitioning to horizontal flight.</cite> The company refers to this configuration as a blended-wing-body tail-sitter, combining vertical take-off-and-landing (VTOL) capability with fixed-wing cruise efficiency. <cite index="3-3,3-4">The current drone, called TRT, weighs about 3.3 pounds and can carry around 2.2 pounds of payload; the next version, currently under development, is expected to weigh about 6.6 pounds and carry up to 11 pounds.</cite>
The design philosophy targets a longstanding inefficiency in cargo aviation. <cite index="10-7">Conventional aircraft spend most of their energy carrying their own weight rather than payload, making flight expensive for smaller loads.</cite> <cite index="14-21">Airbound's current payload-to-aircraft weight ratio runs approximately three times better than the industry norm of 4:1.</cite> <cite index="3-6">Founder and chief executive officer Naman Pushp said Airbound intends to retain vertical takeoff and landing even as it develops larger aircraft, to avoid dependence on runways.</cite>

Operational Record
<cite index="3-8">Founded in 2023, Airbound has completed more than 13,000 autonomous flights across the southern Indian cities of Bengaluru and Guntur.</cite> <cite index="14-6">All 13,000-plus missions were completed with zero failures.</cite>
The most substantive commercial deployment is with Narayana Health. <cite index="11-2">A pilot that began in January 2026 connected Narayana Health's Chandapura Clinic to its central laboratory at Narayana Health City in Electronic City via a 4 km aerial route.</cite> <cite index="13-7">Over 54 consecutive operational days, the system completed 700-plus flights, transporting up to 40 diagnostic samples per flight with zero delivery failures.</cite> <cite index="15-6,15-7">A single drone covers the 2.5-mile route in roughly seven minutes, whereas the same samples take three to five hours by road once the time spent waiting for enough samples to justify a ground trip is included.</cite>
<cite index="15-8,15-9">The partnership is expanding to Narayana's new Banashankari hospital in Bengaluru, a facility designed without an on-site diagnostic laboratory or blood bank, relying instead on Airbound's drones to connect it to centralised facilities.</cite>
Andhra Pradesh Agreement and Scale Ambitions
<cite index="5-2,5-3">Airbound has also signed an agreement with Andhra Pradesh to develop a three-city drone delivery network, marking a step towards commercialising its aircraft and expanding their use in logistics.</cite> <cite index="2-13">The startup is targeting a network linking three cities in Andhra Pradesh, with a stated goal of 10,000 flights a day for retail, e-commerce, and healthcare deliveries.</cite> <cite index="15-12,15-13">The agreement involves no government contract and no subsidy; the state is working with Airbound on the regulatory framework the network requires, and revenue is expected to come from companies using the service.</cite>
Regulatory Context
<cite index="4-5">India's Drone Rules 2021 reduced several approval requirements and laid the groundwork for a more digital regulatory system, while the government indicated that drone corridors would be developed for cargo deliveries.</cite> <cite index="4-6">In addition, the government reduced goods and services tax (GST) on drones to 5%, a move intended to support the wider drone ecosystem.</cite>
<cite index="15-14">Indian competitors including Skye Air Mobility and TSAW Drones are already building aerial logistics operations, and drone makers such as Garuda Aerospace have explored delivery.</cite> Pushp has framed Airbound's role as an aircraft manufacturer serving operators rather than running routes itself, targeting cost parity with ground freight as its long-term benchmark.
