Databricks Reaches $188 Billion Valuation on Strategic Funding Led by Coatue

The data and AI infrastructure company has signed a term sheet for a new round believed to be approximately $3 billion, earmarking capital for Unity AI Gateway, Genie, and Lakebase as enterprise agent demand accelerates revenue past $6.9 billion annualized.

Funding Round and Valuation

On July 16, 2026, Databricks announced strategic funding at a $188 billion valuation. The company has signed a term sheet for the round, which it expects to close later this summer, led by existing investor Coatue, with additional new and existing investors also participating. Databricks did not disclose the precise raise amount, but other outlets have reported the figure is roughly $3 billion.

The $188 billion valuation represents a roughly 40% jump from the $134 billion the company commanded in February 2026. That February close was a $5 billion Series L raise; five months before that, in September 2025, Databricks had raised $1 billion at a $100 billion valuation. Coatue, the New York-based crossover fund, has backed Databricks since its Series E in 2019.

Product Investment: Unity AI Gateway, Genie, and Lakebase

Databricks will deploy new capital across three products: Unity AI Gateway, its multi-AI governance solution that helps enterprises govern and control costs of their AI; Genie, its AI coworker that turns business data into trusted answers and actions; and Lakebase, its serverless Postgres database built for AI agents.

Unity AI Gateway introduces capabilities that help organizations gain visibility into AI usage, control costs, and optimize spend across their AI estate. The gateway is designed to address a cost fragmentation problem that has emerged as enterprises scale Large Language Model (LLM) deployments: Databricks's Unity AI Gateway can notify people as they get close to using up their AI budgets. Companies have stopped "tokenmaxxing," or encouraging workers to use as many tokens as possible, and are now "value-maxxing" to optimize efficiency while still drawing on AI's powers, according to CEO Ali Ghodsi.

Lakebase is a serverless PostgreSQL database designed to support AI agents and modern enterprise applications. The product traces its lineage in part to Databricks' May 2025 acquisition of Neon for approximately $1 billion, a serverless PostgreSQL platform with 80% of its databases created automatically by AI agents — demonstrating explosive growth in agentic workloads.

Financial Context

Databricks now generates $1.7 billion in annual revenue from AI products, up from $1.4 billion in February 2026. The company reported crossing a $6.9 billion annualized revenue run rate at its Data + AI Summit in June 2026, up from $5.4 billion just four months earlier. Databricks SQL (Structured Query Language) also reached $1.5 billion in Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR), growing more than 100% year-over-year.

That growth, however, comes with a new cost: gross margins have slipped to 74%, down from above 80%, as AI agents deployed on the platform generate far more queries — and far more compute demand — than human users. "It's the consumption-based business model, agentic AI coming," Ghodsi told CNBC. "The agents are generating way more queries. We have all these agents, the agents and agent platform we have also generates revenue, so it just increases the consumption of everything all around."

Competitive Position and IPO Outlook

Databricks competes with Snowflake, and analysts widely see it as a public-listing candidate alongside marquee names such as OpenAI and Anthropic. CEO Ghodsi has told investors Databricks is IPO-bound, potentially as early as 2027, while calling 2026 the "worst year" to go public given the volume of high-profile listings already scheduled.

More than 20,000 organizations worldwide — including over 60% of the Fortune 500 — rely on Databricks to build and scale data and AI applications, analytics, and agents. The new capital, management says, will sustain the company's multi-model strategy as enterprise competition for AI infrastructure intensifies.
