On May 11, 2026, OpenAI announced the launch of the OpenAI Deployment Company (DeployCo), a majority-owned subsidiary aimed at helping large organizations build and operate production AI (Artificial Intelligence) systems. The company is designed to help organizations build and deploy AI systems they can rely on every day across their most important work. Concurrent with the launch, OpenAI agreed to acquire London-headquartered consultancy Tomoro to provide initial engineering capacity.
Structure and Capital
DeployCo launches with more than $4 billion of initial investment, which it will use to scale operations and acquire firms that can accelerate deployment work. The OpenAI Deployment Company is a committed partnership between OpenAI and 19 leading global investment firms, consultancies, and system integrators. The partnership is led by TPG, with Advent, Bain Capital, and Brookfield as co-lead founding partners, and B Capital, BBVA, Emergence Capital, Goanna, Goldman Sachs, SoftBank Corp., Warburg Pincus, and WCAS as founding partners. Investors also include consulting and systems integration firms such as Bain & Company, Capgemini, and McKinsey & Company.
The OpenAI Deployment Company is majority-owned and controlled by OpenAI, giving customers a unified experience whether they work with OpenAI, the Deployment Company, or both. OpenAI launched the unit as a standalone business so it can develop the operating model, pace, and customer focus that this work requires.
The Tomoro Acquisition
OpenAI has agreed to acquire Tomoro, an applied AI consulting and engineering firm that helps enterprises turn AI into operational advantage. The acquisition will bring approximately 150 experienced Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) and Deployment Specialists to the OpenAI Deployment Company from day one. Founded in 2023 in alliance with OpenAI, Tomoro is headquartered in London with offices in Edinburgh, Manchester, and an APAC (Asia-Pacific) headquarters in Singapore with additional offices in Sydney and Melbourne.
Tomoro's prior work spans mission-critical workflows for companies such as Tesco, Virgin Atlantic and Supercell, where reliability, integration, governance, and measurable business impact matter from the start. Other clients include Fidelity International, the NBA (National Basketball Association), and Red Bull, and the firm launched an in-game support agent at Supercell serving 110 million users in 12 weeks. The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including applicable regulatory approvals, and is expected to close in the coming months.
Operating Model
DeployCo will extend OpenAI's ability to embed engineers specialized in frontier AI deployment, known as Forward Deployed Engineers, into organizations working on complex problems in demanding environments. These FDEs will work with business leaders and frontline teams to identify where AI can make the biggest impact, redesign organizational infrastructure and critical workflows around it, and turn those gains into durable systems. A typical engagement will begin with a diagnostic of where AI can create the most value, followed by a focused set of priority workflows selected with leadership. FDEs will then design, build, test, and deploy production systems that connect OpenAI models to the customer's data, tools, controls, and business processes.
Competitive Context
The structural move positions OpenAI more directly against Anthropic and traditional systems integrators in the enterprise services market. The launch comes as OpenAI faces intensifying pressure from rival Anthropic, whose Claude models have seen rapid adoption among enterprise developers. Anthropic is reportedly working on a similar venture, raising $1.5 billion from Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, and Goldman Sachs. DeployCo's investment and consulting partners sponsor more than 2,000 businesses globally, giving the unit a built-in pipeline of potential customers. OpenAI states that more than one million businesses have adopted its products and APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) over the past several years.
