Amazon launches Alexa for Shopping, retiring Rufus AI assistant

Amazon merged its Rufus chatbot into a new agentic shopping assistant built on Alexa+, adding price-history tracking, side-by-side product comparisons, and scheduled autonomous purchases.

Amazon on May 13, 2026 introduced Alexa for Shopping, an AI-powered retail assistant that replaces the company's Rufus chatbot and consolidates conversational commerce features into its Alexa franchise. <cite index="6-2,6-3">The company launched the e-commerce bot, which can answer queries and take actions on behalf of users, as the centerpiece of its artificial intelligence shopping strategy.</cite> <cite index="3-3">The rollout is scheduled to reach all United States customers within the following week.</cite>

From Rufus to Alexa for Shopping

<cite index="6-9,6-10">Amazon unveiled Rufus a little over two years ago as a key part of its website and app to take advantage of the generative AI boom; it was described as an "expert shopping assistant," though it remained in beta.</cite> <cite index="6-11">The stand-alone Rufus chatbot will be discontinued, but Amazon said it will use Rufus' recommendation features and shopping history for certain Alexa for Shopping queries.</cite>

<cite index="6-4">Amazon said the new tool brings together Rufus and Alexa+, and taps a user's history and other data to be "the world's best, most personalized AI assistant for shopping."</cite> According to Amazon executive Rajiv Mehta, Vice President of Conversational Shopping, the company built the unified product because <cite index="4-21">customers were starting shopping "missions" in one place and resuming them in another, while Rufus and Alexa did not share memory or context.</cite>

Features and access

<cite index="6-12">Users can summon Alexa for Shopping by clicking a cursive A icon on Amazon's website or app, or via Echo Show displays.</cite> <cite index="6-13,6-14">The assistant turns Amazon's search bar into a Q&A engine and lets users compare products side by side, as well as schedule purchases when an item hits a certain price; a Prime membership is not required to use the tool.</cite>

Additional capabilities include personalization based on recurring orders and budget ranges, AI-generated product overviews in search results, and price-history charts. <cite index="1-13">Amazon says the assistant can compare products across multiple criteria, surface AI-generated summaries in search, and show up to a year of price history for some products.</cite> <cite index="3-11">Amazon confirmed that users will retain control over privacy settings and voice recordings through the Alexa Privacy Dashboard.</cite>

Daniel Rausch, Amazon's top Alexa executive, argued the assistant has structural advantages over rival tools. <cite index="6-18,6-19">Rausch said the new offering is superior to other AI shopping tools because it has access to valuable data such as customer reviews and a vast product catalog, and that it can reliably tell a user whether a product is in stock or estimated delivery times.</cite>

Competitive context

The launch comes as third-party AI assistants increasingly position themselves between consumers and merchants. <cite index="6-16,6-17">OpenAI, Google and Perplexity have rolled out research tools and agents over the past year that threaten to disrupt how people shop online, though some of those efforts have stumbled and it is unclear whether consumers are ready to hand off the task of completing a purchase to bots.</cite> <cite index="6-20,6-21">Amazon has been reluctant to partner with rival AI platforms and open up its site to external shopping agents; CEO Andy Jassy has said the company is "having conversations with" and expects to partner with third-party agents, though Amazon continues to block many bots from accessing its site.</cite>

<cite index="6-24,6-25,6-26">By inserting Alexa for Shopping into search results, Amazon is taking advantage of valuable real estate for promotion; the move could prove disruptive to Amazon's millions of third-party sellers, who pay top dollar to promote their listings and rank higher in traditional search results, with sponsored product listings accounting for most of the company's advertising revenue.</cite>
